It's been over a year that I've been teaching photography workshops and I have to say that I've been loving it. People often ask me tips and techniques about doing great portraits. Here's my TOP 3 to make better portraits of your loved ones.
1. Move your camera!
After I realized that most of my students shoot photos with a landscape format, I came to the conclusion : TURN YOUR CAMERA! You can do awesome portraits on a portrait format too!
2. You're the "boss" : shoot whenever you want!
You always feel like your model looks tensed or is very concentrated looking at your lense : wait a few seconds while your model tries to relax and catch that natural smile in between shots! You'll get more natural looks for sure!
3. ALWAYS edit your photos!
All your digital photos have that "grey" layer on top : it is necessary to edit all your pictures with Photoshop or any other program you may use. Levels, contrasts, lights are some of the steps that you wanna change for sure!
Here's a photo that hasn't been edited yet...
And 3 different ways to edit that same picture, using RadLab and Maggie Holmes scripts for those photos.
And, to finish, HAVE FUN! Photography for scrapbookers is a hobby, you should enjoy it and have lots of fun! Feel free to TRY new things : if you don't like it, delete it! :)
Thanks to my models :)
